Police Bar Seun Kuti, Afrika Shrine From Hosting #EndSARS Movement Meeting

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has barred Seun Kuti, son of afrobeat legend, the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, from hosting a meeting concerning the #EndSARS movement at the Afrika Shrine, Ikeja.

The disapproval was made known in a letter dated 16 November signed by CSP Sholla Omilade Ahihoje, the Alausa Divisional Police Officer, and addressed to the manager of Afrika Shrine, following an earlier request by the venue seeking permission to host the event.

The shrine had signalled to the police its intention to host the event entitled: “Mass meeting of the movement of a people tagged #EndSARS movement: Lessons and task”, on 17 November at the New Afrika Shrine by 12 noon.

According to the police, its disapproval of the event is because the recent #EndSARS protest across the country, which campaigned against police brutality, ended up turning violent and led to the death of security personnel and Nigerians.

It noted that the country is still facing a difficult time in trying to stabilise and will, therefore, not give approval to the convening of such a meeting.

The statement read: “I want to quickly recall your attention to the recent #ENDSARS PROTEST NATIONWIDE which staged the Nation (sic) in the last five weeks and end up (sic) being Violent, causing multifarious destruction, looting and burning down of Government and Private properties within the borders of the state as well as causing Deaths and injuries to both Security agent (sic) and innocent law-abiding citizens.

“It is on this premise that, I write that such a gathering or meeting planned to be hosted at your venue is not welcome at this perilous time when the security of the nation is trying to find her foots (sic) to stabilise all threat to life and properties.”

The police warned the event organisers to suspend the meeting as “any infraction that may emerge from this gathering will be tag (sic) a deliberate action to sabotage the transition and restoration of the Peace in Lagos State by the Lagos State government and the Nigeria Police Force”.
